CS2: Fullscreen vs Fullscreen Windowed — FPS, Input Lag, 4:3 Stretched, Launch Options (2026)

Which CS2 display mode to use in 2026: what Fullscreen and Fullscreen Windowed actually do on Windows 11, what measured tests say about input lag and FPS, how to get 4:3 stretched in both modes, the launch options that still work, and fixes for the mode not sticking.

Quick answer: On Windows 11, CS2's Fullscreen Windowed mode is no longer the "slow" option. CS2 renders it through the DXGI flip model (PresentMon shows "hardware: independent flip"), and a community NVIDIA Reflex Latency Analyzer test measured 8.9 ms end-to-end in Fullscreen vs 8.7 ms in Fullscreen Windowed — within normal variance. Pick Fullscreen Windowed if you alt-tab, stream, use a second monitor or want chat visible. Pick Fullscreen if you rely on GPU-scaled 4:3 stretched with an older driver setup, or if your refresh rate or G-Sync misbehaves in windowed modes. Since the 14/18 August 2025 updates, 4:3 stretched works in Fullscreen Windowed too. And if the reason you want windowed is to see Discord, Twitch chat or a browser while you play, there is a third option that keeps the game in a native-fullscreen-class presentation: run CS2 on its own virtual monitor and put the apps beside it on one screen — see the last section.

This is the CS2-specific version of the borderless vs fullscreen question. The general article covers the Windows mechanics; this one covers what CS2 does, what has changed since 2025, and the exact settings.

The three CS2 display modes and what they actually do

CS2's Settings → Video → Display Mode has three options: Fullscreen, Fullscreen Windowed and Windowed.

ModeWhat CS2 doesPresentation path (user PresentMon reading, Win11)Refresh rate
FullscreenTakes the display at the resolution you set. Valve calls it "full-screen exclusive" in its release notes.Hardware: legacy flipThe rate you set in CS2
Fullscreen WindowedA borderless window the size of your desktop. Resolution and aspect ratio can be changed inside it since the August 2025 updates.Hardware: independent flipYour Windows desktop refresh rate
WindowedA regular window with borders.Composited by DWMDesktop refresh rate

Two facts explain most of the "fullscreen windowed feels different" threads:

  1. Fullscreen Windowed uses the desktop refresh rate. Steam Support states that in Windowed and Fullscreen Windowed the refresh rate "is determined by your system's display settings". If Windows is at 60 Hz, CS2 runs at 60 Hz no matter what the CS2 setting says. Set the refresh rate in Windows Settings → System → Display → Advanced display first.
  2. Windows 11 presents windowed games through the flip model. Microsoft's "Optimizations for windowed games" setting moves DirectX 10/11 games from the old blt presentation to flip model, "reducing frame latency". Microsoft's own DXGI guidance calls flip-model windowed presentation "effectively equivalent or better" than classic fullscreen exclusive. CS2 is a DirectX 11 game by default (Vulkan with -vulkan), so this applies.

CS2 stores the choice in video.txt under Steam\userdata\<id>\730\local\cfg: setting.fullscreen "0" plus setting.nowindowborder "1" is Fullscreen Windowed. That file matters later, because it is the fix for the mode not sticking.

FPS and input lag: what the measurements say

There is no Valve benchmark comparing the modes, so treat every number below as what it is: one test on one PC, cited with its source.

  • Input lag: a Blur Busters forum member measured CS2 with NVIDIA's Reflex Latency Analyzer at 1080p / 360 Hz, 50-click averages: 8.9 ms in Fullscreen (legacy flip) vs 8.7 ms in Fullscreen Windowed (independent flip). Their own conclusion: "within margin of error or normal variance".
  • FPS: a single Skin.club benchmark run (August 2025, Ryzen 7 7800X3D + RTX 5070 Ti, Dust 2) reported higher FPS in Fullscreen Windowed than in Fullscreen, for example 657 vs 532 FPS at 1920×1080 Medium. One uncontrolled test, so do not quote it as a law — but it is the opposite of the old CS:GO folklore.
  • The general rule still holds elsewhere: Blur Busters' G-SYNC 101 found no extra frame of delay from borderless with G-Sync on, while noting a 3–5 % performance decrease in other games. CS2 on Windows 11 appears to be a case where the flip model closes that gap.

Our own lab does not benchmark CS2, so we make no CS2 FPS claim of our own. What we have measured is on the performance lab page: a windowed Cyberpunk 2077 run on our rig lost roughly 10–15 % versus the same game on a native-fullscreen Game Stage, and a GPU-bound scene went from 72 to 144 fps when the render resolution dropped from 1440p to 1080p. CS2 at 1080p is usually CPU-bound, so do not expect that kind of gain from resolution alone.

Practical reading: if you are on Windows 11 with current drivers, the mode decision is about convenience and stretched resolution, not about raw speed.

Which mode should you use?

Use Fullscreen Windowed if you:

  • alt-tab to Discord, a browser or your stream dashboard between rounds,
  • play on a multi-monitor setup (Fullscreen can minimize CS2 when you click the other screen; Fullscreen Windowed does not),
  • stream with OBS and want a clean, stable capture,
  • get a 2–3 second black screen on alt-tab in Fullscreen (a known driver/DSC quirk; Fullscreen Windowed avoids it).

Use Fullscreen if you:

  • run 4:3 stretched through GPU scaling and your setup predates the August 2025 change or the stretch is flaky in windowed mode,
  • see G-Sync artifacts in windowed modes — Steam Support warns that "G-Sync can introduce visual glitches when playing non-fullscreen windowed",
  • cannot get your monitor's full refresh rate to apply in Windows.

4:3 stretched in CS2, step by step

In CS2: Display Mode Fullscreen, Aspect Ratio 4:3, Resolution e.g. 1280×960 (1024×768 and 1440×1080 are the other common picks). Apply.

NVIDIA: NVIDIA Control Panel → Display → Adjust desktop size and position → Scaling mode Full-screen, Perform scaling on GPU, tick Override the scaling mode set by games and programs.

AMD: AMD Software → Display → GPU Scaling: Enabled, Scaling Mode Full panel (AMD defines Full panel as stretching non-native resolutions to the whole monitor).

Fullscreen Windowed + stretched (since August 2025): Valve's 14 August 2025 update added "Rendering resolution and aspect ratio can now be changed in fullscreen windowed mode", and the 18 August 2025 update fixed cases where it "wasn't actually stretching to fill the screen" and wasn't offering extreme aspect ratios. So the old trick of setting the Windows desktop to 1280×960 before launching is no longer required. If stretched still does not apply in Fullscreen Windowed, the GPU scaling settings above still have to be set, because windowed modes inherit the desktop scaling.

Vulkan note: with -vulkan, users report that 4:3 resolutions are not stretched automatically; stay on DirectX 11 for stretched, or set the desktop resolution to the 4:3 mode.

Stretched keeps reverting to black bars? Check, in this order: NVIDIA scaling back on "Aspect ratio" or "Override" unticked (driver updates reset this), AMD GPU Scaling off, the monitor's own OSD scaling set to "aspect", and finally toggle Fullscreen → Windowed → Fullscreen in CS2 to re-apply.

Launch options that still work in CS2 (and the ones that don't)

Source 2 dropped most CS:GO flags. The Valve Developer Community lists these for Source 2 (several are marked "confirm", meaning the wiki has not independently verified them):

Launch optionEffectStatus in CS2
-fullscreen / -fullStart in FullscreenListed (confirm)
-windowed / -swStart in a regular windowListed
-noborderWindow without bordersListed (confirm); together with -windowed it does not always stick, CS2 re-reads video.txt
-w 1280 -h 960Force resolutionListed (confirm)
-freq 360Set refresh rateListed (confirm); -refresh is not on the wiki, though pros still carry it
-highHigh process priorityListed (confirm)
-vulkanVulkan renderer instead of DX11Works; affects stretched behaviour (see above)
-novidSkip intro videoNo effect: CS2 has no intro
-threads NThread countRemoved; CS2 manages threads itself
-tickrate 128Server tickrateDeprecated; CS2 is 64-tick with sub-tick
-nod3d9exDX9 flagNo function in CS2

There is no dedicated launch option for Fullscreen Windowed. Set it in the menu or in video.txt. There is also no -stretchaspect, despite the requests you will find on the forums.

Useful console variables for windowed players: engine_no_focus_sleep 0 stops the engine from throttling to 20 ms sleeps when CS2 loses focus (default 20), and fps_max_ui caps the frame rate while the menu is open (default 120).

Fixes for the usual problems

  • CS2 starts in Windowed every time / Fullscreen Windowed does not stick. Close CS2, open video.txt (path above), set setting.fullscreen "0" and setting.nowindowborder "1", save. Launch-option toggles lose to this file.
  • Refresh rate stuck at 60 Hz in Fullscreen Windowed. Windowed modes use the desktop rate. Set 144/240/360 Hz in Windows display settings; the CS2 refresh-rate box then shows "your display's current refresh rate" (Valve's June 2024 note).
  • Alt-tab gives a black screen for seconds. Switch to Fullscreen Windowed; several users on NVIDIA DSC monitors report the black screen only in exclusive fullscreen.
  • CS2 minimizes when I click my second monitor. Fullscreen behaviour; Fullscreen Windowed fixes it.
  • Sensitivity feels different between the modes with stretched res. Players report this when the stretched scaling differs between modes; verify your in-game resolution is identical in both modes before changing sensitivity.
  • G-Sync flicker in windowed. Either enable G-Sync for "windowed and full screen mode" in NVIDIA Control Panel or use Fullscreen; Valve itself flags the glitches.

Play CS2 in a window and keep Discord or chat visible — without the windowed trade-offs

Most people choose Fullscreen Windowed for one reason: to see something else while they play. Discord, Twitch chat, a browser, the team's Slack. With a borderless window you still have to alt-tab or shrink the game to make room, and anything "always on top" sits over the crosshair.

Staged takes a different route. It gives CS2 its own virtual monitor and shows that monitor as a movable window on your real screen. The game renders at the resolution you choose on that virtual display; Discord, chat and OBS get their own zones around it. Measured on our rig: direct hardware scanout with zero compositor overhead, sub-frame latency (the stage shows the same frame as the game, 10/10 samples), under 0.2 ms of processing overhead, full 144 Hz capture frame-for-frame. Staged never touches the game process — no hooks, no injection — which matters in a VAC title.

Two honest notes for CS2 players:

  • Stretched 4:3 is not something Staged does. The stage shows the game at its real aspect ratio with letterboxing, never stretched. If stretched is your thing, stay on Fullscreen with GPU scaling.
  • CS2 is CPU-bound at low settings. The "up to 2× FPS, measured" result on our lab page comes from a GPU-bound scene where the render resolution dropped from 1440p to 1080p. In CS2 the gain from resolution is usually small; the reason to use Staged is seeing chat and Discord beside the game on one monitor without alt-tabbing, not extra frames.

Frequently asked questions

Does fullscreen windowed cause input lag in CS2?

Not in a measurable way on Windows 11. A Reflex Latency Analyzer test by a Blur Busters forum member measured 8.9 ms end-to-end in Fullscreen and 8.7 ms in Fullscreen Windowed, which the tester called normal variance. Fullscreen Windowed uses the flip model ("independent flip"), the same low-latency path Microsoft recommends. Make sure Windows itself runs at your monitor's full refresh rate, because windowed modes inherit it.

Is Fullscreen or Fullscreen Windowed better for FPS in CS2?

There is no Valve benchmark. The one published 2025 test (7800X3D + RTX 5070 Ti) showed Fullscreen Windowed ahead, and the input-lag test showed no difference. In practice, choose by convenience: Fullscreen Windowed for alt-tab, streaming and multi-monitor; Fullscreen for stretched setups that misbehave in windowed mode.

How do I get 4:3 stretched in CS2 Fullscreen Windowed?

Since Valve's 14 and 18 August 2025 updates, set Display Mode to Fullscreen Windowed, Aspect Ratio 4:3 and a 4:3 resolution directly in CS2. Keep GPU scaling set to Full-screen (NVIDIA) or Full panel (AMD) with the override enabled, because windowed modes use the desktop's scaling. Before those updates the workaround was to set the Windows desktop resolution to 1280×960 first.

Why does CS2 keep switching back to Windowed?

CS2 reads the display mode from video.txt in Steam\userdata<id>\730\local\cfg, and launch options like -noborder do not always override it. Set setting.fullscreen "0" and setting.nowindowborder "1" in that file for Fullscreen Windowed, or "1" / "0" for Fullscreen.

Why is my refresh rate 60 Hz in Fullscreen Windowed?

Because Fullscreen Windowed and Windowed use the Windows desktop refresh rate, as Steam Support documents. Set the refresh rate in Windows display settings; CS2 then shows the current rate in its Refresh Rate box.

Does CS2 Fullscreen Windowed work with G-Sync?

It can, but Steam Support warns that G-Sync may introduce visual glitches in non-fullscreen windowed modes. Enable G-Sync for windowed and full screen mode in NVIDIA Control Panel, and switch to Fullscreen if you still see flicker.

Can I keep Discord or Twitch chat visible while playing CS2 without alt-tabbing?

Yes. Either play in Fullscreen Windowed and keep the apps on a second monitor, or run CS2 on a virtual monitor with Staged and place Discord and chat in zones beside the game on one screen. Staged never injects into the game, so there is no anti-cheat risk; the stage keeps the game's real aspect ratio.
