How to Stop Minecraft Pausing When You Alt-Tab (F3+P, pauseOnLostFocus, Windowed vs Fullscreen)

Press F3+P in Java Edition, or set pauseOnLostFocus:false in options.txt with the game closed. Plus: alt-tab minimizing, Bedrock, servers.

Quick answer: In Java Edition press F3 + P once in-game. That turns off "pause on lost focus" and the game saves it to options.txt as pauseOnLostFocus:false. To edit the file instead, close Minecraft first, open %APPDATA%\.minecraft\options.txt and change pauseOnLostFocus:true to false. If the game also disappears (minimizes to the taskbar) when you alt-tab, that is a separate display-mode problem: since 26.3 the default borderless fullscreen no longer does it; on older versions use windowed mode or a mod like Cubes Without Borders. Bedrock Edition has no F3+P; turn off Show Pause Menu on Focus Lost under Settings → General → Pause (26.10 and later, Windows). Multiplayer servers never pause anyway.

People searching "Minecraft pauses when I alt-tab" are usually hitting one of two things. You alt-tab to Discord, YouTube or a wiki and either (1) Minecraft opens the pause menu, so your auto farm, furnaces or AFK fishing stop, or (2) the window vanishes and seems to reload when you come back. The two have different causes and different fixes. This guide covers both on Windows 11, for Java Edition first, then Bedrock, servers and launchers such as Lunar.

Two different things happen when you alt-tab out of Minecraft

Pausing is something Minecraft's engine does on purpose. Since Java Edition 1.4.2 (snapshot 12w34a) there has been an option called pauseOnLostFocus, default true: when the window stops being the active one, the game behaves exactly as if you had pressed Esc. The game menu opens and a singleplayer world freezes. Windows is not involved. Switching to windowed mode or adding a second monitor changes nothing here. Only that setting does.

Minimizing ("the game closes when I alt-tab") is a display-mode problem. From Java 1.13 up to 26.2, "Fullscreen: ON" took exclusive control of the monitor, and when such a window loses focus Windows drops it to the taskbar. Coming back, the game re-grabs the monitor, the screen blinks once or twice, and it feels like a reload. This one is fixed by changing how the game is displayed, not by any in-game pause setting.

So: freezing is pauseOnLostFocus; disappearing is the fullscreen mode. If you get both, you need both fixes.

Method 1: F3 + P in-game (fastest)

  1. In a world, hold F3 and press P.
  2. A debug message appears top-left: "Pause on lost focus: disabled". Press F3 + P again and it says "enabled".
  3. Done. The toggle is written to pauseOnLostFocus in options.txt, so it survives restarts.

From now on alt-tabbing does not open the pause menu and the mouse goes straight back to look control when you return. On many laptops F3 is a media or brightness key, so use Fn + F3 + P, or switch the function-key mode in the manufacturer's utility or BIOS. Some keyboards need F3 held first and then P.

One caveat: F3 + P only disables the automatic pause. Esc still pauses as usual, which is what you want when you actually step away.

Method 2: set pauseOnLostFocus:false in options.txt

Use the file when F3 + P does not register (keyboard issue, some server-side plugins) or when you want to apply it to several instances at once.

  1. Close Minecraft and the launcher completely. The game rewrites options.txt on exit, so an edit made while it is running gets overwritten.
  2. Press Win + R, type %APPDATA%\.minecraft and press Enter. The full path is normally C:\Users\YourName\AppData\Roaming\.minecraft.
  3. Open options.txt in Notepad.
  4. Find the line pauseOnLostFocus:true and change it to pauseOnLostFocus:false. If the line is missing (a reset file or an ancient version), add pauseOnLostFocus:false at the bottom.
  5. Save and start the game.

Good to know:

  • The key exists in every Java version from 1.4.2 onward: 1.8.9, 1.12.2, 1.16.5, 1.20.x, 1.21.x and 26.x.
  • Launchers with per-instance folders (CurseForge, Prism Launcher, MultiMC, the Modrinth App) keep a separate options.txt inside each instance folder. Open that instance's game directory and edit the copy there. F3 + P is a vanilla key, so it works in every launcher regardless.
  • The only line you change:
pauseOnLostFocus:false

Method 3: pause only when you want to, with F3 + Esc

The opposite case: you want alt-tab to leave the game running, but sometimes you want to freeze it quietly without the menu covering the screen. Since 1.14.1, F3 + Esc pauses the game without opening the pause menu (singleplayer only, not rebindable). Handy for screenshots or a Discord call where you want the world visible but frozen. Note that opening your inventory (E) or a chest does not pause a singleplayer world; only the Esc menu and F3 + Esc do.

Alt-tab minimizes the game: fullscreen vs windowed vs borderless

If pausing is off and the window still vanishes on alt-tab, look at the display mode. Java Edition behaves differently depending on the version.

26.3 (released 15 September 2026) and newer: window handling moved to SDL3 and borderless fullscreen became the default. With Options → Video Settings → Fullscreen: ON, alt-tab no longer minimizes the game and it keeps rendering behind whatever you open on top. The same screen has a separate Exclusive Fullscreen toggle, default OFF. Turn it on and you are back to the old monitor-grabbing behaviour, including minimizing on lost focus. Switching no longer needs a restart. The old "Fullscreen Resolution" option was renamed Exclusive Fullscreen Mode and only matters in exclusive mode.

26.1 to 26.2: 26.1 introduced the Exclusive Fullscreen toggle, but borderless only became the default in 26.3. On 26.1 or 26.2, set Exclusive Fullscreen to OFF in Video Settings.

1.13 to 1.21.x: the stock fullscreen is exclusive, so alt-tab minimizes. Three options:

  • Windowed and maximized: turn fullscreen off (F11) and maximize the window. You see a title bar and the taskbar, but the game never minimizes.
  • The Cubes Without Borders mod: a client-side mod for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt covering 1.14 through 26.3. It adds a Borderless choice to the Fullscreen setting in Video Settings, and F11 switches to borderless by default. With Sodium installed, its Fullscreen Mode offers Off / Exclusive / Borderless / Windowed.
  • Fix it on the Windows side: leave the game alone and give it its own display. See the paragraph below.

Lunar, Feather, Badlion: as far as we could verify, none of the three ships a dedicated "borderless fullscreen" toggle. Lunar Client only decides whether to go fullscreen, via Launcher Settings → Game Resolution → "Launch in Fullscreen?" and the fullscreen value in .minecraft\optionsLC.txt. On a 26.3+ profile you get the vanilla borderless default; on a 1.8.9 or 1.21 profile, windowed mode is the reliable choice. Check the client's own mod list in case a borderless module has been added since.

To be fair about windowed mode: it costs a little FPS and input latency compared with exclusive fullscreen. Our Cyberpunk measurement showed roughly a 10–15 % windowed penalty on our rig, and in a CPU-leaning game like Minecraft the difference is usually smaller. The mechanics are in borderless vs fullscreen.

If you want to alt-tab without the windowed workaround at all, Staged gives the game its own virtual monitor and shows that monitor as a window (the Game Stage) on your real screen. Minecraft never loses its display, so alt-tabbing or clicking the Discord or YouTube zone next to it never minimizes the game, and nothing is hooked or injected into the game process. The pause itself is still the engine's decision, so pauseOnLostFocus must still be false. Staged fixes the disappearing; F3 + P fixes the freezing.

Bedrock Edition on Windows works differently

Bedrock has neither F3 + P nor options.txt. Since Bedrock 26.10 (March 2026) there is a Windows setting instead.

  1. Go to Settings → General → the Pause section.
  2. Turn Show Pause Menu on Focus Lost ("Shows the pause menu when switching to another application", default on) off.
  3. Enable Game Pause in the same section decides whether a singleplayer world actually freezes while the pause menu is open. That is the real pause feature added in 2025. Leave it on and only disable the focus-lost option.

On Bedrock builds older than 26.10 there was no official way to stop the menu from appearing on lost focus; updating is the fix. Fullscreen is toggled under Settings → Video → Fullscreen or with F11 (Windows only), and the Bedrock window is a normal Windows window, so it does not minimize on alt-tab the way old Java fullscreen did.

Multiplayer servers never pause

A server world is ticked by the server. Hypixel, a friend's Realm or your own SMP keeps running while you alt-tab, mobs included. But with pauseOnLostFocus still true the menu still opens: nothing freezes, yet you have to click "Back to Game" every time you return and you miss chat in the meantime. That is why F3 + P is worth pressing even if you only play on servers. When you AFK-fish or run farms on a server, pausing is not the worry; minimizing is. Also check the server rules, since many kick idle players after a while.

Frequently asked questions

How do I stop Minecraft from pausing when I alt-tab?

Press F3 + P in-game. It disables "pause on lost focus" and the setting is saved permanently. To do it by file, close the game, open %APPDATA%.minecraft\options.txt and set pauseOnLostFocus to false.

I edited options.txt but it keeps going back to true. Why?

Because the game was running while you edited it. Minecraft rewrites options.txt on exit, which overwrites your change. Close the game and the launcher, then edit and save. On a modpack launcher, make sure you edited the options.txt inside that instance's folder.

F3 + P does nothing on my keyboard. What now?

On most laptops the function keys default to media controls. Try Fn + F3 + P, or hold F3 first and then press P. If it still does not register, edit options.txt as in method 2. Bedrock Edition has no F3 + P; disable Show Pause Menu on Focus Lost in Settings instead.

Why does Minecraft minimize when I alt-tab, and how do I stop it?

That is exclusive fullscreen, not the pause setting. Java 26.3 and newer default to borderless fullscreen and do not minimize; if Exclusive Fullscreen is on, turn it off. On 1.21 and older, use windowed mode and maximize (F11), install Cubes Without Borders, or give the game a virtual monitor with a tool like Staged.

Does windowed mode also stop the pausing?

No. Windowed mode only prevents minimizing. With pauseOnLostFocus set to true the menu still opens the moment the window loses focus, even in windowed mode. Turn pausing off separately with F3 + P or in options.txt.

Does Minecraft pause on multiplayer servers when I alt-tab?

The server world keeps running. With pauseOnLostFocus true only the pause menu opens, so you have to close it when you come back. To stop even that, press F3 + P on servers too.

What do I need to leave a farm running while I watch YouTube?

In singleplayer, disable the pause with F3 + P and use a display mode that does not minimize (the 26.3 default, or windowed). Chunks only tick near the player, so stand close to the farm. If you want the game large with YouTube beside it, see how to watch YouTube while gaming.

Alt-tab without Minecraft freezing or disappearing

Pausing is one F3 + P away; the vanishing window is decided by the display mode. Staged runs Minecraft on a virtual monitor so it never minimizes when you alt-tab, and keeps the game large on one monitor with Discord, YouTube and the wiki docked beside it. It is coming to Steam. Wishlist it to be first to play.
